Clarkson Edged Out By St. Lawrence

After battling St. Lawrence to a 5-5 tie through the first half, the Clarkson University Lacrosse team came up just short over the final 30 minutes against the Saints, suffering an 8-6 loss in Canton on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who stand at 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty League, will strive to lock up a conference playoff berth on Saturday when they close out the regular season hosting Vassar in a 1:00 p.m. start at Hantz Turf Field.

Clarkson behind a solid defensive outing, backstopped by a career-high 18 saves from sophomore goaltender Nick Strandholm, held the high-powered St. Lawrence (9-6, 5-1) offense in check for most of the game, but the Saints were able to score three key goals in the second half to pull out the win.

St. Lawrence held a 5-4 edge after the opening 15 minutes, but Clarkson tied the game with sophomore Ryan St. Croix's second goal of the day late in the second quarter.

The Saints outscored the Knights 2-0 in third, including the lone man-up goal of the game by Tommy Hovey with 3:57 remaining in the quarter for a 7-5 lead through 45 minutes.

Senior Matthew Gold tallied Clarkson's lone goal of the second half with 9:31 remaining in the fourth quarter to pull the Knights to within one at 7-6. St. Lawrence, however, sealed the home win with Charlie Duprey's goal with 2:15 left.

St. Croix led Clarkson up front with two goals and one assist.

St. Lawrence outshot the Knights 44-22 and controlled ground balls 18-11.

Seniors Mark Nortz and Dylan Hrebenach, and sophomore Ryan DaRin scored one goal apiece for Clarkson. Junior Austin Case picked up a team-high three ground balls.
