Knights Earn Second Split in Florida

Clermont, FL - With 13 runs in 12 innings, the Clarkson University Softball team's offense was running on all cylinders, but the Golden Knights came away with a split on Sunday, taking a 8-0 win over Plymouth State and falling one run short, 6-5, against Worcester State.

The Golden Knights, now 4-2 overall, will take a day off before finishing the second half of the 12-game Florida schedule, beginning on Tuesday.

In the opener on Sunday, Plymouth State never really threatened in the game, producing just three hits over five frames. In contrast, Clarkson took almost no time getting on the scoreboard as Raeanna Dunn tripled to open the game and then came home on a double by Summer Lancette to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second frame, Lancette began the third with a walk and then raced around the bases on a triple by Chelsea Elliott that went all the way to the wall. On the overthrow relay attempt, Elliott was then able to score to give the Knights a 3-0 lead. In the fourth, it appeared as if Clarkson might have a chance to end the game early as three more runs came across the plate. Louise Terwilliger walked to open the inning Alycia Short was reintroduced as a pinch-runner. Dunn then reached on an infield single to put runners on first and second and Lancette delivered a triple to plate two runs, giving Clarkson a 5-0 edge. Jamie Bridge hit a sharp groundout to short, but that was enough to allow Lancette time to get home for a 6-0 Knights edge. In the following inning, Dunn made it all the way to third on a throwing error by the Plymouth shortstop and Lancette produced an RBI single to give Clarkson a 7-0 lead. After stealing second, Lancette then scampered around the turn on a Chelsea Elliott single through the left side for an 8-0 lead.

Dunn finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored while Lancette was 3-for-3 with four driven in and three more scored. Elliott was 2-for-2 with a pair driven in and Katie Pelton was 2-for-3. Pelton earned the starting nod and allowed two hits and a walk in two innings for the Knights before being relieved by Bridge, who finished off the game by allowing just one hit in three innings.

The second game provided a more formidable opponent for the Knights as Worcester State scored twice as many runs as any other Clarkson foe this season. The Lancers scored two on a double in the third innings to take a 2-0 lead, but Clarkson responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Katie Pelton singled and moved around to third on a wild pitch while Lancette walked and stole second to put runners on second and third. Bridge then ripped a double to left to plate the pair and tie the game at 2-2. Three runs in the fourth inning broke the tie and turned the tide for the Lancers, but the Knights would not go away, scoring one in the bottom half of the fifth. With runners on first and second, Lancette lined a shot to second base that was dropped with the runners taking different looks at the play. Pinch-runner Jennifer Latham easily scored on the play thinking the ball was up the middle, while Raeanna Dunn thought the ball was snagged and retreated to first. While the ball did drop, it wasn't far enough away for Dunn to advance as she was forced at second base. In the bottom of the sixth, Ali Schenzfeier led off with a single and scored four batters later on an RBI-single from Bridget Woolley to make the score 5-4. The Lancers tacked on a key run in the top of the seventh as Clarkson threatened again in the bottom of the inning. With runners on second and third and just one out, Schenzfeier nearly beat out a grounder to short, allowing one run to score and make the score 6-5. However, with a runner still in scoring position the final batter also grounded out to end the game.

Bridge was 1-for-3 with two RBI and also pitched six innings for the Knights, allowing seven hits and a pair of unearned runs while striking out four with no walks. For Worcester State, Meghan Rich earned the win and also went 3-for-4 at the dish. Hayley Terry was 3-for-4 and Katie Storro went 2-for-4.
