Clarkson Completes Sweep of Dartmouth with 4-1 Win

Three third-period goals helped ensure that the fifth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team will host the ECAC Hockey Championship Tournament for the second consecutive year, as the Green and Gold defeated Dartmouth 4-1 to sweep the best-of-three quarterfinal series.

Top overall seed Clarkson is now 24-9-3 this season while eighth-seeded Dartmouth finishes the season with a 13-15-2 record.

"I thought the team played at a high level again tonight applying a lot of pressure on the puck and working hard in all areas of the game<" said="" clarkson="" head="" coach="">Matt Desrosiers. "Dartmouth started the game off well and really made us work for our chances. Their goalie made some great saves tonight but we knew if we just continued to keep playing the way we were and putting a lot of pucks on net that the goals would eventually come. Again, Shea (Tiley) was able to make some timely saves to not allow them to even things up. Overall I thought it was a great weekend of playoff style hockey that was played by the team. We are definitely going to need the same from everyone heading into the league championship weekend."

After a scoreless first period, Clarkson would get on the board at the 16:21 minute of the second period; just two seconds after a Dartmouth player had come out of the penalty box. Clarkson had worked the puck around until junior assistant captain Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT) took a shot from the top. The rebound fell to freshman Brielle Bellerive (N. Vancouver, BC) on the left post and she squared it across the goal line where fellow rookie Amanda Titus (Stittsville, ONT) was for a simple tap-in.

Clarkson would blow the game open in the third period with three goals. The first came at 5:52 during a Clarkson power play.  Ambrose hit a shot that bounced off the back wall and into the path of junior assistant captain Olivia Howe (Moose Jaw, SASK) who centered it for fellow assistant captain Renata Fast (Burlington, ONT) to finish. It was the 109th career point for Ambrose who is now tied with Marie-Jo Gaudet '09 for eighth on the Clarkson all-time points list.

Clarkson would add another at 10:16 when sophomore Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, QUE) passed to senior Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE) in front of the net and Lambert took a backhand shot that squeaked through the legs of the Dartmouth goaltender. The last Clarkson goal came at 12:57 when Howe stole the puck in the Dartmouth end and fed junior Cayley Mercer (Exeter, ONT) who scored her team-leadind 23rd goal of the season.

Dartmouth would add a consolation goal at 16:04 to finish the scoring at 4-1. The goal represented the first goal the Big Green had scored in Cheel Arena since October 28th, 2011, a span of eight games. It also ended Clarkson freshman goaltender Shea Tiley's (Owen Sound, ONT) scoreless streak at 226 minutes.

Tiley would finish with 26 saves. Clarkson held a 55-27 advantage in shots with the 55 shots a season high for the Golden Knights. Clarkson was 2-6 on the power play and killed both Dartmouth man-advantage opportunities.

Clarkson will host both the ECAC Hockey semi-finals and final next weekend in Cheel Arena. One semi-final will see Clarkson play host to Cornell, while on the other side, Harvard and Quinnipiac will meet.
