Knights Advance to Liberty League Championship Game with Win at Hobart

Geneva, NY - Scoring early and leading throughout the contest, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team earned its first victory in post-season play since 2008 when it topped Hobart College 69-59 in the Liberty League Semifinals Wednesday evening.

The Golden Knights, the third-seed in the conference tournament, improved to 20-6 overall and will travel to face Skidmore in the championship game at 2:00 pm on Saturday. The win also pushed Clarkson to a program-best 20th win, the most in more than 100 seasons of Golden Knights' basketball. The victory was also Clarkson's first in the Liberty League playoffs since 2008, when the Knights earned their first NCAA appearance. Hobart dropped to 18-8, losing in the first round of the conference tournament for the first time since 2011.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard first and the game was in its hands for the rest of the game, as the team never relinquished the lead. Charles McAllister buried a 3-pointer at the 15:03 mark to give Clarkson a 10-2 lead and while the Statesmen were able to get back to within a single possession midway through the half, they were unable to find an answer for the Knights. Dylan Hodownes hit a free throw with less than five minutes to go to give Clarkson a 24-15 lead and a Drew Zlogar jumper in the final minute helped extend the Knights advantage to double figures for the first time in the game. The key for Clarkson in the opening half was its perimeter defense, as Hobart led the league in 3-pointers in 2014-15, but had just a single make in the first 20 minutes.

The Statesmen got back within three points (32-29) at the 16:50 mark of the second half, but that would be as close as Hobart would get for the rest of the game. Clarkson edged out to a 10-point lead once again on a Zlogar 3-pointer with 5:51 remaining and a pair of free throws from Hodownes three minutes later gave Clarkson its biggest lead (55-42) of the game. Though Hobart would quickly pull within eight points just 17 seconds later, the Knights made free throws down the stretch to hold off the charge for a 10-point win.

Clarkson shot 22-for-28 from the free throw line, with the majority of those makes coming in the second half. Hobart rallied to make three more 3-pointers in the second half, but still finished with just a 4-for-25 effort (16.0%) from beyond the 3-point arc.

John Coleman came through with a double-double, his second of the season, on 14 points and 12 rebounds and the senior also added three assists and three steals. Dylan Hodownes closed with 12 points and Charles McAllister added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Knights' starters were strongly supported by the reserves, as the bench tallied 23 points. Trey Blanding produced a solid all-around game with 24 points, five rebounds, three assists and seven steals. Andrew Hoy tossed in 13 points and Connor Rehbaum added 11 for the Statesmen.
