Mercer's Hat Trick Leads Clarkson to 4-2 Win

A hat trick from junior assistant captain Cayley Mercer propelled the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to a 4-2 victory over visiting New Hampshire on Friday afternoon in Cheel Arena.

Fourth-ranked Clarkson is now a perfect 8-0-0 this season while New Hampshire falls to 0-6-0.

"I thought UNH came out hard to open the game and were aggressive on their forecheck, which forced us to have to get our feet moving and be sharp with our passing," stated Clarkson Head Coach Matt Desrosier. "The goal we scored at the end of the first period was important and really helped us settle in a bit. We need to take the positives from tonight's game and build upon those to come out strong tomorrow."

New Hampshire got on the board first when Sara Carlson scored her first goal of the season at the 3:27 mark.

Mercer scored her first goal with under two minutes left in the first period. She stole the puck near the center line and passed to classmate Genevieve Bannon. Bannon's return pass allowed Mercer to score and tie the game at one.

Clarkson took the lead with two second-period goals. First, freshman Loren Gabel scored a power-play goal off a pass from Bannon at 4:25. Mercer scored her second goal at 15:54. Senior assistant captain Olivia Howe and freshman Kelly Mariani had the assists.

Mercer completed her hat trick at 1:30 in the third period. The goal came when Howe, from behind the net, found Mercer in the crease, with Mariani again adding an assist off a faceoff win.

New Hampshire scored a second goal when Jonna Curtis latched onto an errant Clarkson pass and scored. That was it for the Wildcats though as Clarkson held on for the 4-2 win.

Clarkson outshout New Hampshire 34-19 and scored on one of its two power-plays while killing off all three Wildcat extra man opportunities. Shea Tiley finished with 17 saves for Clarkson while Vilma Vaattovaara made 30 stops for New Hampshire.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm in Cheel Arena.
