Second Half Run Sets Knights Up for Win at Hobart

Geneva, NY - A 10-point run by the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team was coupled with a six-minute scoring drought by Hobart as the Golden Knights started off the Liberty League slate with a 66-56 win on Friday night.

The Golden Knights moved to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Statesmen dropped to 5-5 and 0-1. Clarkson will look to stay unbeaten in the Liberty League when it faces RIT on Saturday afternoon.

Though the Knights held small leads in the first seven minutes of the game, Hobart utilized a 10-0 run midway through the first half to take a 20-11 lead. Five minutes later, Clarkson had not made up any ground and trailed by 13 points (28-15) with 4:49 remaining in the half. A Derek Hart (Poughkeepsie, NY) basket started Clarkson on a 14-2 run, and Hart made another lay up with a minute left in the half to end the run, pulling the Knights to within one point, a deficit that the Green and Gold would find themselves in at the half.

The first eight minutes of the second half saw Clarkson and Hobart battled back and forth without either team gaining much of a jumping off point to grab the momentum. Hobart's Connor Rehbaum buried a 3-pointer with 12:08 remaining to give the Statesmen a 44-41 lead, but the home team wouldn't score again for six more minutes and Clarkson would take advantage with a 10-0 streak. The Knights would never let their advantage fall below two possessions for the rest of the game, and Clarkson sailed to a double-digit win at Hobart for the first time since 2004.

The Knights struggled from the perimeter, shooting just 3-for-14 from beyond the 3-point arc, but they made up for that deficiency with a strong run from the free throw line, going 19-for-25. John Coleman (Potsdam, NY) finished with 25 points, going 9-for-15 from the field and 6-for-8 from the line, and eight rebounds. The senior surpassed the 1400-point barrier for his career and moved into sole possession of third-place on Clarkson's all-time scoring list in the process (1412). Junior Felix Abongo (Beacon, NY) added in 14 points while Hart nearly recorded a double-double coming off the bench with 10 points and nine rebounds. Charles McAllister (Olathe, KS) also tossed in six points, seven boards, and six assists for the winners.

For Hobart, Rehbaum finished with 17 points and six rebounds and Trey Blanding chipped in 10 points.
