Knights Drop 62-49 Decision at St. Lawrence

Canton, NY – The two highest scoring teams in the Liberty League clashed Tuesday night in Canton, but neither the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team or host St. Lawrence showed off on offense as the Saints outlasted the Golden Knights 62-49.

The Knights fell to 12-5 overall and 5-3 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence moved into sole possession of first place in the conference at 8-1 and 13-4 overall.

It took four minutes for Clarkson to score as the Knights missed their first nine shots of the game and fell behind by nine in the early going. The Knights recovered to tie the game at 11-11 midway through the period and took the lead for the first time on a Cara Manfredi free throw at 10:20, but a 10-0 run by the Saints a few minutes later gave St. Lawrence a 25-16 lead. With just 1:40 to go in the half, Devin Sorell nailed a jumper from the elbow on a fast break to tie the score at 25-25, however St. Lawrence scored five of the final seven points of the half to take a three-point lead (30-27) into the locker room.

Clarkson shot just 11-for-39 in the first half (28.2%), but it would not get better in the second half as the Knights made just nine attempts out of 41 in the final 20 minutes, and were 0-for-10 from beyond the 3-point line. Despite the poor shooting performance, the Knights would somehow find themselves within just six points (43-37) with 11:03 to go, but another small run by the Saints would effectively put the game out of reach.

Clarkson shot just 25.0% from the floor (20-for-80) thanks to 24 offensive rebounds but just a few put backs. St. Lawrence wasn't much better at 19-for-53 (35.8%), especially since the Saints committed 26 turnovers in the game with the Knights making 15 steals.

Devin Sorell came off the bench to score 11 points, also adding in seven rebounds and three steals. Cara Manfredi tossed in 10 points and grabbed six rebounds to go along with a pair of steals. For St. Lawrence Kara McDuffee had 25 points, going 13-for-15 from the free throw line, 14 rebounds and six assists in 33 minutes. Allison Cady also produced a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, and blocking three shots on defense.
