As the defending National Champions, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team found out on Friday night in its season-opener just how challenging it will be in 2014-15 as every team will bring its "A" game against the Golden Knights.

St. Lawrence struck for two early first-period goals an then held off the Green and Gold in the third period to hand Clarkson a 5-3 loss at Appleton Arena in Canton to snap a four-game losing skid in the North Country series.

The Knights and Saints will faceoff again on Saturday in Potsdam at 4:00 p.m. to complete the season-opening, non-league weekend. Prior to the game Clarkson will hold a ceremony to honor the 2013-14 team by raising their NCAA National Championship banner to the Cheel Arena rafters.

"I thought we got better as the game went on tonight but we definitely need to clean some areas up before heading into tomorrow's game," stated head coach Matt Desrosiers. "The nice thing is that I think it is a lot of simple adjustments we need to make and focus more on doing the little things well that win you games. It was our first game with a lot of new faces and players playing different roles so we expected there to be a learning curve. Hopefully our players can use tonight as a learning tool and realize the importance of working hard at the little things.  I like how our team didn't quit and were able to dig in to battle back from being two goals down. If we can maintain that resolve throughout the season while continuing to get better we will be in good shape."

Trailing 2-0 after the first and 3-1 midway through the middle frame, Clarkson battled back to force a 3-3 tie through 40 minutes.

Clarkson started out strong to start the second and got on the scoreboard when junior captain Shannon MacAulay (Mt. Herbert, PEI) scored from the slot after taking a pass from freshman Brielle Bellerive (North Vancouver, BC) at 2:42. Senior Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE) also assisted.

St. Lawrence regained its two-goal lead, temporarily, with a goal by Kennedy Marchment at 9:44, but the Knights came right back with a pair of power-play scores 3:31 apart to force a 3-3 tie through 40 minutes.

MacAulay scored in front for her second of the game off a pass from behind the net by Lambert at 12:21. Sophomore defenseman Corie Jacobson (Warren, ONT) also assisted.

At 15:52, the Knights struck again with the man-advantage when junior Olivia Howe (Moose Jaw, SASK) connected off a pass from Bellerive. Junior defenseman Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT) also assisted.

The Saints, who had just one win in their previous nine games against the Knights, gained their first victory over the Knights since early February, 2013 with two late goals in the third.

At 17:51, Jessica Hon slipped her own rebound under Clarkson freshman goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) to break the deadlock. Just over a minute later, St. Lawrence sealed its win with an empty-net goal by Kailee Heidersbach.

St. Lawrence enjoyed the better of the play in the opening minutes to build a 2-0 lead. At 1:57, Brooke Webster knocked in a rebound past Clarkson's senior goaltender Emily Horn (Hamilton, ONT) to give the home team the early momentum. St. Lawrence struck again with a power-play goal by Webster at 9:59.

Clarkson outshot the Saints 35-23 and enjoyed the better of the specialty teams play, going 2-of-4 with the man-advantage while killing off one-of-two St. Lawrence power plays.

Horn, who sat out last year nursing an injury, made only her second career start in the Clarkson crease, and first appearance since mid-October 2012. She finished with six saves through 30 minutes.

Tiley came in off the bench after St. Lawrence's third goal and posted six saves over the final 10 minutes of the middle frame and six more in the final period for 12 total stops
