Hamden, CT - Earning an overtime tie against Quinnipiac, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team slipped into a tie for first-place in ECAC Hockey with Cornell University, but the team still clinched home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks with a 1-1 tie against the Bobcats Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights, ranked fourth in the country in the last poll, moved to 20-8-4 overall and 14-4-2 in ECAC Hockey with 30 points through 20 league contests. Quinnipiac moved to 16-8-8 overall and 9-4-7 in league play.
Despite peppering the Quinnipiac cage in the first period, Clarkson found itself trailing after 20 minutes. The Bobcats opened the scoring late in the frame with a goal in the final minute when Brittany Lyons finished off a chance at the 19:02 mark for her fourth goal of the season. Kelly Davies and Bethany Dymarczyk assisted on the goal. The Knights closed the frame with a 15-6 edge in shots.
The shot advantage wasn't as pronounced in the second period for Clarkson (11-7 in the period, 26-13 overall), but the Knights were able to even things up thanks to a power-play score. Forty-one seconds after Quinnipiac was whistled for body checking, junior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) scored her 14th goal of the season, and league-best eighth on the power play, at the 10:43 mark of the middle frame. Seniors Dominique Thibault (L'Orignal, ONT) and Carlee Eusepi (Oakville, ONT) each were awarded assists on the score, Thibault's 17th helper on the season and Eusepi's 11th assist.
The two teams remained scoreless through the third period and overtime as the Knights finished with a 38-26 edge in shots and went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Bobcats were held scoreless in four chances with an extra skater. Junior Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY), who finished with 25 saves, allowed just two goals all weekend but had a record of 0-1-1. Victoria Vigilanti had 37 saves for Quinnipiac.
