Potsdam, NY - With the two teams combining to average better than 20 runs per game entering Sunday's tilt, one would have expected offensive fireworks, but the Clarkson University Baseball team and Rensselaer succumbed to cool conditions and a pair of stong pitching performances as the Red Hawks' Andrew Mondo outdueled Clarkson's David Goerold (Clifton Park, NY) in a 3-0 win for RPI Sunday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium.

The Golden Knights fell to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in Liberty League games, ending a five-game winning streak. Rensselear won its 15th straight game to improve to 16-4 and 9-0 in conference games. The two teams are tentatively scheduling a make up in Troy on Tuesday afternoon.

Rensselaer manufactured a run in the top of the first inning when Sean Wilkes came home on a sacrifice fly after starting the frame with a pair of groundball singles. Andrew Krushelynski drove in the run with his one-out fly out to center field. The next inning, RPI picked up another run on a solo home run from Mike Cieszko that just cleared the left field fence. From there, Goerold settled in and induced numerous groundballs to his infielders for easy outs.

Mondo mowed through the Clarkson lineup, allowing back-to-back hits in the second inning to Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY) and Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY), but a double play and a strike out allowed him to wiggle out of the jam and the Knights were unable to muster another hit until the eighth inning when Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) beat out a tapper for an infield single.

By that point, RPI had picked up another run on an RBI single from Scott Robinson in the sixth inning, finally chasing Goerold. Greg Chojecki (West Seneca, NY) and Vincent Baldwin (Catskill, NY) delivered three solid innings of relief for the Knights.

Sean Wilkes went 3-for-5 to lead RPI, while Pat Reardon and Jim Devine each had two hits for the Red Hawks. Mondo struck out nine and walked two in the complete-game victory, improving to 5-1.
