Canton, NY - A significant second-half deficit in draw controls proved to be a difficult point to overcome as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 19-15 decision to St. Lawrence University in the team's last contest of the season Tuesday.
The Golden Knights finished the season at 4-10 overall and 1-7 in the Liberty League, while the Saints moved to 6-7 and 3-5. Clarkson plays its annual Alumni game at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.
In the first half, the Saints took advantage of several advantageous bounces to get a good lead in draw controls, enjoying the offensive advantage early on and taking a 5-3 lead just 11 minutes into the game. However, Clarkson ran off four straight goals over the next 11 minutes to take a 7-5 lead with just under eight minutes to go. The Saints responded with four of the final five goals in the half to take a 9-8 lead at intermission.
The Saints won the first seven draws of the second half and finished the final 30 minutes with a 15-3 edge on faceoffs. Trailing by a single goal after an unassisted score from senior Alyssa Breed (Macedon, NY), St. Lawrence rattled off four straight goals to take a 16-11 lead with 14:43 to go. Clarkson was unable to end the run until the clock read under 10 minutes, and the Knights always found themselves playing defense after goals, making sustained offensive pushes difficult.
Senior Emily Bojarski (Syracuse, NY) scored five goals and an assist to lead Clarkson offensively. Classmate Alyssa Breed added three goals and two assists. Freshman Saryn Campbell (West Bolton, VT) contribued three points on two goals and an assist. Junior Kimberly Loucks (Waterloo, NY) added in two points on a goal and an assist, helping her tie the Clarkson record for points in a single season. Nikki Corso (Derry, NH), Laura Barlow (Latham, NY), Alyssa Dausman (Syracuse, NY), and Brittnie Carroll (Dexter, NY) each added a goal.
Defensively, Hannah Walters (Amherst, NH) made 14 saves and had six groundballs for the Knights. Clarkson trailed in groundballs 28-27 and was behind 27-9 in draws.
