Potsdam, NY - Two early goals proved to be enough to squash the chances of the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team as Potsdam State defeated the Golden Knights 3-0 Thursday evening at Potdam's Turf Field.
The Golden Knights moved to 3-11-2 overall with the loss and close out the season on Saturday afternoon when they host the Bears. Potsdam improved to 8-9-1.
Clarkson held a 12-8 edge in shots and a 5-3 lead in corner kicks, but was unable to take advantage of their chances, as most of those opportunities came from outside the penalty area.
Potsdam's Cortney Poirier scored at the 3:30 mark from Nicole Volpi, and Heather Johnson scored exactly eight minutes later, again from Volpi. The second half saw Volpi and Poirier connect again, at the 56:05 mark.
Stephanie Collins (Colton, NY) made two saves for the Knights while Sarah Casey made seven saves in 87 minutes and Lisa Bates stopped one shot in the final three minutes for Potsdam.
The three goals scored by Potsdam were the second-most ever scored by the Bears. Clarkson still leads the all-time series handily, with a record of 14-6-3.
