Burlington, VT - With three goals in the second period, the University of Vermont quickly reversed the momentum and shocked the fourth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, 4-1, Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights lost their first game of the season, falling to 4-1-1 on the season, Vermont improved to 3-1. Clarkson will try to get back on the winning track when it hosts the University of New Hampshire next Friday.
Early on it appeared as if the Knights were going to pick up from where they left off on Friday when they shutout the Catamounts, 4-0. Junior Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) tallied on the power play just 1:40 into the first period with assists going to Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) and Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT).
Unfortunately for the Green and Gold, the early score was all that they would get. Vermont would even the score at 7:13 in the second period on a goal from Saleah Morrison, but the game would remain tied for the next nine minutes. However, in the final four minutes Vermont scored two power-play goals that would break the game open. Following a holding penalty, the Catamounts scored at 16:14, and late in a two-minute hooking penalty, Vermont scored again, at 19:04.
Clarkson held a 10-3 edge in shots in the final frame, but was unable to make any traction against the Catamounts. An empty net goal produced the final score of the contest.
Clarkson finished with a 27-17 lead in shots, but Clarkson was whistled for 18 minutes worth of penalties, which proved to be costly. Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) stopped 13 shots for Clarkson, while Kristen Olychuck made 26 saves for Vermont.
