Canton, NY - Three goals in the final 17 minutes, including two in a span of just 27 seconds and another in the final minutes, send the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to a 4-0 loss at St. Lawrence Thursday afternoon at SLU's Sandy MacAllaster Field.
The Golden Knights dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League, while the Saints improved to 6-3-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the Liberty League.
Senior Meg Howard opened the scoring for the Saints just 7:43 into the game when she tapped in the rebound after Marcelle Justison’s rising shot was saved, but not controlled by Clarkson keeper Stephanie Collins (Colton, NY).
It stayed a 1-0 game despite several Saint opportunities as Collins played incredibly well in goal for the Knights, making 16 saves. Late in the second half, the Saints started an offensive push that was too much for Clarkson to overcome. Stephanie Sayward sent senior Becca Townsend in all alone on Collins at the 73:13 mark and Townsend shot to the far corner for her third goal of the season. Sayward also figured in the third Saint goal just 27 seconds later as she took a hard shot which eluded Collins and headed for the far post where Justison redirected it into the net for her fourth of the season. Saint rookie Alex Troli completed the scoring with 43 seconds to play when she took a pass from senior Shellie Brozka and put the ball home for her first collegiate goal.
Saint goalie Abby van Geldern finished with nine saves in her fourth shutout of the year as the Saints had an overall edge of 33-14 in shots and a 20-9 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints had four corner kicks to Clarkson’s three.
