A late rally by the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team came up just short as the Golden Knights saw their five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) come to an end with a 2-1 loss at St. Lawrence University Wednesday night.
Clarkson, which opened a five-game New York State road trip in Canton, will travel to the Capital District this weekend to faceoff at Rensselaer and Union. The Knights, who suffered their first loss of the new year, stand at 12-7-4 overall and own a 6-3-2 ECAC Hockey mark.
Trailing 2-0 to the fourth-ranked Saints (15-5-3, 9-1-1) with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Clarkson made it a one-goal game on junior Britney Selina’s (Thornhill, ONT) fifth goal of the season. Skating on the power play and with their goaltender out for the extra skater, the Green and Gold put some pressure on St. Lawrence with a 6-on-4 advantage, and the Knights’ efforts paid off as Selina scored during a scramble in front with 1:18 remaining. Senior captain Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) and sophomore Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) picked up the assists.
The Saints, who improved their record to 11-1-1 at Appleton Arena, took a 1-0 first period lead with a power-play marker by Emma Clark at 6:22. The goal came off a Clarkson turnover in their end with just two seconds left in the St. Lawrence power play.
Clarkson came close to tying the game early in the second frame, but a breakaway shot by standout freshman forward Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) wad turned aside by the Saints’ goaltender just 55 seconds into the period.
After a scoreless second period St. Lawrence made it 2-0 off a tipped-in goal by Carson Duggan at 13:39 of the third, which proved to be the game-winner.
St. Lawrence out shot the Knights 28-22, including a 14-7 advantage over the final 20 minutes. Sophomore Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) posted 26 save, while the Saints’ Chartier Brittony made 21 stops.
Both teams went 1-of-3 on the power play.
