Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Eve Grandmont-Berube (Drummondville, QUE) made 21 saves, including 18 over the final two periods, to help preserve a 2-1 victory over Brown for the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights improved to 12-6-4 overall and 6-2-2 in ECAC Hockey, while Brown moved to 3-14-1 and 2-9-0 in the conference slate. Clarkson plays a midweek game on Wednesday when it travels to Canton, NY to take on fifth-ranked St. Lawrence.
After a scoreless first period in which the two teams combined for just 11 shots, Brown was able to get on the scoreboard first when the puck trickled over the goal line. Jenna Dancewitz was credited with the score as she pushed the puck across at 8:46, recording the power play goal with assists going to Maggie Suprey and Paige Pyett.
Clarkson responded with a power play goal of its own nine minutes later when freshman Juana Baribeau’s (Amos, QUE) shot fluttered over the shoulder of Brown goaltender Nicole Stock. One minute and 12 seconds into the power play, at 17:24 in the second, Baribeau scored when her shot from the top of the left circle jumped over the glove side of Stock, with assists going to Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) and Carlee Eusepi (Oakville, ONT). It was Baribeau’s 15th goal of the season
The winning goal came less than two minutes into the third period with both teams skating evenly. Just five seconds after a Knights’ power-play elapsed, Genevieve Lavoie (Delson, QUE) took the puck and shuttled it out to Kimberley McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT). McKenney dropped the puck off to Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) in the right circle and the sophomore neatly placed the puck top shelf for 2-1 Clarkson lead. The goal was Waldie’s ninth of the campaign.
Grandmont-Berube finished with 21 saves in the contest while Stock had 32 stops for Brown. The Bears were 1-for-2 on the power play and the Knights went 1-for-5 while attacking with an extra skater. Clarkson had a 34-22 shot advantage.
