Six Run Rally Falls Short For Knights In Game Two of Split Versus Skidmore

April 26, 2008

Saratoga Springs, NY - Finishing the weekend in a stalemate against Skidmore College wasn't quite what the Clarkson University Baseball team was hoping for when it first embarked on its road trip, but it is better than a potential alternative, as the Golden Knights came through with a split for the second straight day, winning game one, 7-4, before falling short in game two, 10-8.

The Golden Knights moved to 15-16 overall and 7-9 in the conference, while Skidmore finds itself at 19-13 and 11-9. Clarkson remains a game behind the Thoroughbreds in the conference standings with a recognized league mark of 10-10, thanks to rainouts.

Trailing by a run in the third inning, sophomore Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY) hit his second homer of the season to lead off the inning, and the Knights would add another when Sean Griffin (Walden, NY) singled home a run. Torbitt delivered another run-scoring hit in the fourth inning and Clarkson would tack on four more in the fifth to pick up the victory.

Griffin finished 3-for-3 and Torbitt was 2-for-3 in the game. Steve Magovney (Watertown, NY) also went 2-for-3 in the contest.

Austin Pitkin (Dexter, NY) won his fourth game of the season, going six innings and allowing just two earned runs while striking out four with no walks.

In game two, Clarkson and Skidmore started off very slowly at the plate as both teams scored just two runs each through the first seven innings. In the eighth and ninth, however, the Thoroughbreds plated five and three runs, respectively, to take a 10-2 lead.

Clarkson would not go quietly in its final at bat, though, as the Golden Knights came up just short in the rally, scoring six times in the ninth. Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY) highlighted the inning with a three-run homer, his seventh of the season, which ranks as the second-most in a single season by a Clarkson hitter. Holiday finished 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and Torbitt also added two hits in the second contest.

David Goerold (Clifton Park, NY) started for the Knights and pitched well through the first five innings. Clarkson needed four pitchers in the final two innings to close out Skidmore, with Kyle Moldoff (Nassau, NY) taking the loss.
