Schenectady, NY - Junior Mike Bresett (Norwood, NY) extended his school-record hitting streak to 23 games in a 7-2 victory in the opener of Tuesday's doubleheader against Union College, but he and other Clarkson University Baseball players saw numerous streaks snapped in the nightcap in a 4-0 loss to the Dutchmen at Central Park.
The Golden Knights saw their record move to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in the Liberty League while Union broke out of a long losing skid to improve to 3-14 and 1-12. Clarkson visits Oswego State in a non-league doubleheader on Wednesday.
Bresett went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in during Tuesday's first game as Clarkson fell behind early in the contest but quickly rallied against the Dutchmen. Union scored an unearned run in the top of the first, but it appeared as if it was only a matter of time before the Knights would take the lead. That lead came in the way of a four-run third inning when Brett Peplowski (Albany, NY) tied the game up with a sacrifice fly prior to Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY) and Brady Torbitt (Fulton, NY) drove in runs with back-to-back doubles. Another run came in on a gadget first-and-third play as Austin Pitkin (Dexter, NY) took off for second and forced a throw in a run down, allowing Torbitt to come home from third base.
The Knights added two more in the fourth and another run in the seventh inning. Bresett delivered a two-run single up the middle in the fourth and back-to-back doubles from Torbitt and Pitkin in the seventh provided Clarkson's other run. Along with Bresett, Torbitt went 3-for-4 in the contest.
Greg Chojecki (West Seneca, NY) pitched well enough to earn his third victory of the season, going the distance and allowing six hits and three walks while striking out five. Both of his runs ended up being unearned.
In game two, Union's Andy Brown threw a shutout as he held Clarkson's bats in check for most of the game. Brown allowed just six baserunners on three hits and three walks, but the hits all came in separate innings as Clarkson mounted few threats. The Knights' Austin Pitkin started game two and went five innings, allowing six hits and four runs, three being earned. Jake Groszewski (Rochester, NY) pitched a scoreless, hitless sixth inning to close out the Union bats.
