Troy, NY - Just 36 hours after returning from Florida and nine games in seven days in Orlando, the Clarkson University Baseball started its Liberty League conference slate with a doubleheader against Rensselaer, and dropped the two games 2-0 and 9-4 Saturday afternoon at Robison Field.
The Golden Knights have lost four straight games and now have a record of 5-6 overall, 0-2 in conference, going into tomorrow's doubleheader against the Red Hawks. Rensselaer moved to 9-1 and 2-0.
In game one of the match up, junior Greg Chojecki (West Seneca, NY) and RPI's Joe Zongol locked up in a pitchers' duel as the two matched scoreless frames for all but one-half inning. Zongol finished with a complete-game shutout, tossing a three-hitter and striking out seven, but walking four. Chojecki allowed eight hits over six innings and struck out six, taking the loss. Ken Carroll delivered what turned out to be the game-winning hit, a two-run single in the fourth, providing all the runs that the Red Hawks would need.
The second game saw more offense, but again the Knights were on the short end. Trailing by four runs after three innings, Clarkson ended a 10-inning scoreless streak against the Red Hawks with a home run from Brett Peplowski (Albany, NY), his second of the season. Matt Holiday (Syracuse, NY), who went 2-for-4 as the only Clarkson hitter with multiple hits in game two, followed with a double and later scored on a hit from Cale Giroux (Cortland, NY). Mike Bresett (Norwood, NY) singled in a run for the Knights in the fifth, and scored the other in the eighth.
