Knights Dominate In 7-1 Home-Ice Clinching Victory Over Quinnipiac

February 22, 2008

Potsdam, NY – Four different players recorded power-play goals for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as the Golden Knights cinched up home ice in the first round with an overwhelming 7-1 victory over Quinnipiac Friday night in front of 279 fans at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights continue to hold on to third place in ECAC Hockey with the win, improving to 22-6-5 overall and 13-5-1 in ECAC Hockey, while Quinnipiac, out of the playoff race, dropped to 5-23-5 overall and 2-15-4 in league play.

After a scoreless first period, in which the Knights held a 16-7 edge in shots, Clarkson put on a scoring barrage unlike any other in nearly 70 games. Scoring five goals in the frame, the most scores in a single period since the Knights tallied six times in a September 29, 2006 game, the opener of that season, Clarkson took control and never looked back.

Sophomore Genevieve Lavoie (Delson, QUE) started the scoring parade with seven seconds remaining in a power play that carried over from the first period, picking up a rebound on the goalie’s glove side and depositing it into the net at 0:40. Carlee Eusepi (Oakville, ONT) and Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) each assisted. Less than six minutes later, Laura Hart (Wheaton, IL) scored her first career goal when Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) sent a pass across the crease to the freshman, who chipped the puck in for the goal. Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) also assisted.

Three-and-a-half minutes later, junior Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) picked up a rebounds and skated across the slot and flipped a backhanded shot in for her team-high 21st goal of the season, with assists going to Lavoie and senior Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT). After a brief break, the onslaught continued as freshman Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) slipped in a shot off a rebound from her original shot for an unassisted marker at the 14:04 mark, and Gaudet tallied her second score of the game, skating in alone immediately after a faceoff from the blueline that looked similar to her first goal. Both of those goals came on the power play.

Quinnipiac finally ended the run with a 5-on-3 power-play goal with just 31 seconds remaining in the period. Vicky Graham scored he fourth goal of the season with a backhand in close after the puck could not be cleared by the Clarkson defense.

Clarkson recorded its fourth power play goal of the game at 2:13 of the third period when Selina scored her 18th of the season, with assists going to Waldie and Eusepi. At 13:51, senior Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO) joined the Clarkson scoring list with an unassisted goal.

Freshman Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) made 14 saves for Clarkson, while Tia Wishart made 23 saves through 35 minutes and Jaime Miller made 16 saves in 25 minutes for the Bobcats. Clarkson finished 4-for-7 on the power play, while Quinnipiac went 1-for-5.
