Potsdam, NY – For the first time in 11 meetings, Vermont was able to score multiple goals against the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team, but freshman Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) doubled that output herself, becoming just the fourth player in six years to tally four goals in a game for the Golden Knights as the Green and Gold scored a 4-2 non-league victory, the 100th victory in Clarkson Women’s Hockey history, over the Catamounts Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Knights improved to 7-5-3 with their third straight victory, while the Catamounts dropped to 3-10-1. The two teams will play against at 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoon. Clarkson’s 100th victory came in its 193rd game as a Division I program (100-72-21).

In the opening period, Clarkson got on the scoreboard first at 9:09. Vermont goaltender Kristen Olychuck deflected an initial shot, but couldn’t control the puck. With the puck teetering on its side and rolling toward the goal line, both a Vermont defender and Baribeau made a dash to the net, with Baribeau winning the race to tip in the deflection for her eighth goal of the season. Freshman Katelyn Ptolemy (Dinsmore, SASK) earned her first collegiate point with the assist, and senior Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) recorded her 11th assist of the campaign.

Late in the first, Vermont’s Teddy Fortin barely had enough time to sit down in the penalty box after being whistled for interference with just 12.2 seconds left, when the Knights went up 2-0 only 2.3 seconds later. Junior Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) dropped the puck back on the faceoff from the circle to Baribeau, who then took one step in and wristed a shot top shelf to give Clarkson the 2-0 lead going into intermission.

Vermont cut the Knights’ advantage to a single goal midway through the second period when defenseman Peggy Wakeham scored her third goal of the season. Wakeham found herself in the slot and ready to take a shot, but a Clarkson defender held her stick back slightly. Wareham muscled the stick through and the shot made its way past Clarkson goaltender Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY), who had already committed to what she expected to be a differently angled shot attempt. Freshman Channing Ahbe earned her first point as a collegian with an assist, and Brittany Nelson added her fourth assist of the season.

The Knights spent little time re-establishing their two-goal lead as Baribeau completed her hat trick just 23 seconds after a tripping penalty on the Catamounts. Baribeau took a hard wrist shot from the point that made it past Olychuck’s blocker at 13:36. Classmate Danielle Boudreau (Whitby, ONT) earned her second assist of the season on Clarkson’s third goal.

Baribeau continued her own personal offensive onslaught against the Catamounts in the third period, tallying her fourth goal of the game and 11th of the season. Selina controlled the puck behind the net and sent a pass out to Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT) near the blueline. McKenney rifled a shot on net, and the rebound found its way to Baribeau in the slot, depositing the puck into the back of the net again.

Vermont cut the lead to 4-2 with 7:25 to go when a deflection kicked pass Dahm. Sophomore Teddy Fortin was awarded the goal for the Cats, her third of the season, and Hannah Westbrook gained her second assist of the season. Despite the score, Vermont couldn't mount any more of a comeback against the Knights.

Baribeau became the first Clarkson player to score four goals in a game since the Knights’ inaugural season in 2003-04. Kate Allgood scored four goals in an 11-0 win over Sacred Heart on February 8, 2004. The only other two players to record four goals or more in a game were Ashley Shaidle (five) and Lindsay Williams (four), who both accomplished the feat in an 11-1 win over Colby College on December 6, 2003.

In goal for the Knights, Lauren Dahm made 16 saves in the victory while Kristen Olychuck stopped 29 shots for the Cats. Clarkson went 2-for-3 on the power play and Vermont was held scoreless in seven extra-attacker opportunities. Clarkson held a 31-21 shot advantage.
