Overtime Score Sends Knights to Tough Loss Versus SLU

October 2, 2008

Canton, NY - For the third straight game, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team put a scare into one of the elite teams of the Liberty League, but the Golden Knights once again came up short, this time losing to Route 11 rival St. Lawrence 1-0 in overtime on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-7-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the conference, while St. Lawrence moved to 7-1-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Liberty League play. Clarkson takes a break from conference foes this weekend when it hosts St. John Fisher on Saturday.

Though the shots were certainly in favor of the Saints (25-5), St. Lawrence's true chances were limited by Clarkson's gritty defensive effort, as the shots on goal counter was much closer (9-5) and indicative of how tight the game was.

In the only overtime necessary, St. Lawrence finally got on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal by Becca Townsend. After one shot was deflected by Clarkson goalkeeper Caitlin Titus (Dewitt, NY), the ball found its way to the foot of Townsend, who gladly ended the game with the lone score.

Titus finished the contest with eight saves while Abby Van Geldern made five saves for the Saints. In addition to holding a 25-5 lead in shots, St. Lawrence also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
