Canton, NY - With five players in double figures, St. Lawrence showed why its among the league's top scoring teams as the Saints sent the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to its first Liberty League game loss of the season in an 84-69 setback Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights fell to 4-10 overall and 2-1 in the conference, but look to get back on the winning track this weekend with home games against Vassar and Rensselaer. St. Lawrence remained perfect in the Liberty League at 3-0 and improved to 8-6 overall.
Clarkson led 7-5 early, but a 13-0 run over a four-minute span gave St. Lawrence a double-digit lead and the Saints pushed it to as many as 18 points with five minutes remaining in the first half, but the Knights chipped away and dropped the Saints' advantage to 12 at the half.
In the second half, Clarkson continued to sneak back into the contest, trailing by just seven midway through the second half, but St. Lawrence's diverse offense proved to be too much to handle and the final 20 minutes were mostly spent with the Knights trailing in the teens.
Junior guard Brian Salanger (Syracuse, NY) finished as Clarkson's leading scorer, tallying a career-high 17 points and making five 3-point field goals. Classmate Ryan Smith (Niagara Falls, NY) also recorded a career-high with 14 rebounds, including 10 on the defensive end. Sophomore Brandon Linton (Queens, NY) contributed 16 points and 5 assists, making 8 of his 9 free throw attempts. Junior Elson Pickering (Brooklyn, NY) also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Five players scored in double digits for St. Lawrence, led by Josh Sharlow, who produced a game-high 18 points. Tyler Shaver added in 14 points and Andy Hoercher scored 13. Tom Wopperer and Tyler Wright scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.
