SLU Sweeps Knights for Second Straight Day

May 6, 2007

Canton, NY - A one-hitter was followed by a game with a better offensive showing but the result was the same as the Clarkson University Baseball team dropped its second straight doubleheader to St. Lawrence, 6-1 and 13-6, Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 6-24 overall and 6-12 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence solidified its place in the conference's final standings at 19-12 and 14-6.

Game one was dominated by St. Lawrence starter Mike Gipson as the Knights could only muster one hit against the senior righthander. The Saints took little time to get on the scoreboard as the team pushed across two runs in the first and three more in the second. With Gipson dealing, Clarkson struggled to get back into the contest and fell 6-1.

In the nightcap, the scene was slightly different as Clarkson pushed across six runs on 12 hits. Unfortunately, the Knights committed six errors at the worst possible moments and created scoring opportunities for the Saints as five of the six runs scored against Knights' starting pitcher Steve Magovney were unearned. Andy Engebretson finished the game with a 3-for-4 performance, including two home runs, to go along with three runs scored and five driven home.

In the second game, Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Cale Giroux (Cortland, NY) went 2-for-2 with a three-run double. Matt Curry (Richland, NY) also went 2-for-4 for Clarkson.
