Yellowjackets Sweep Pair from Clarkson

March 31, 2007

Rochester, NY – Sophomore Mike Bresett (Norwood, NY) went 5-for-8 with three RBIs at the plate, but the Clarkson University Baseball team was unable to tally in the win column as the team was swept by the University of Rochester 4-3 and 10-4 Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 0-11 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League conference while Rochester improved to 8-5 and 3-1. The two teams were scheduled to play Sunday, but the games were quickly rained out after the doubleheader's opener was suspended in the bottom of the second inning.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Golden Knights were able to produce offensively in the first inning with three runs on five hits. TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY) and Bresett each delivered run-scoring hits in the first inning as Clarkson enjoyed a 3-0 lead early. However, the Knights couldn’t score for the remainder of the game and Rochester chipped away late with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Devin Shane came through with a bases loaded single to plate the tying run and the game-winning score to give Rochester a 4-3 victory. Bresett went 3-for-4 and Gerald Stothers (Fort Myers, FL) went 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior Darrell Carey (Dade City, FL) took the loss for Clarkson, allowing just four hits and striking out five over six and a third innings.

With ample momentum carrying over from the first game, the Yellowjackets scored eight runs in the first three innings to take an overwhelming advantage that Clarkson could not overcome. The Knights scored three in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 8-3, but another pair of runs in the fifth inning held off Clarkson’s charge. Just five of the 10 runs were earned, however, as Clarkson committed five errors, all in the infield. Brinkman and Bresett each went 2-for-4 and freshman Ralph Rizzo (Bohemia, NY) enjoyed a career day with a 4-for-4 showing in the second contest.
