Clarkson's Quick Start Doesn't Pay Off in Loss at Geneseo

March 31, 2007

A fast start did not provide the spark the Clarkson University Lacrosse team needed on Saturday as the Golden Knights lost a non-league game, 13-8, at 19th-ranked Geneseo.

Coming off an impressive 19-6 win at Plattsburgh to start the week, Clarkson look to be poised for another big victory when it jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Blue Knights late in the first quarter. Sophomores Tom Ross (Adams, NY) and Erik Hilfinger (Ann Arbor, MI) and senior Bryan Jackson (Northport, NY) gave the Knights the three-goal advantage with 5:00 left in the opening stanza. Geneseo, however, roared back with eight of the next 10 goals to hold an 8-5 lead after the opening 30 minutes.

Geneseo (2-3) took a 10-6 lead after three quarters and out scored Clarkson 3-2 in the final frame to post the six-goal win.

Ross scored a team-high three goals for the Knights, while sophomore Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) scored two goals and two assists. Sophomore Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY) tallied one goal. Classmate Jon Cathcart (Homer, NY) recorded two assists.

Andrew Hanover led the Blue Knights with four goals.

Geneseo dominated in shots (47-18) and in groundballs (47-20).

Sophomore Eric Wolery (Cincinnati, OH) made 17 saves for the Knights. Senior Nick Lavdas (Lafayette, NY) picked up a team-high five groundballs for Clarkson.

The Knights, at 2-6 overall, will close out the non-league portion of the schedule this Wednesday when they host nationally-ranked Rochester Institute of Technology in a 3:30 pm game at Hantz Field.
