Knights Record First-Ever Win Over Skidmore

March 23, 2007

Potsdam, NY - Freshman Brittnie Carroll (Dexter, NY) recorded a goal on a free-position shot with just 1:34 remaining in the second half to lift the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team ahead in a seesaw battle, leading to a 16-14 Liberty League win over Skidmore College, the Golden Knights first-ever victory over the Thoroughbreds, Friday evening at Potsdam State's Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-2 overall with their third consecutive win, and 1-0 in the conference, while the Thoroughbreds dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-4. The win was Clarkson's first against Skidmore in 19 tries, including the past three games in which the Thoroughbreds outscored the Knights 50-5. The win also ended a 27-game conference losing streak by the Knights.

Skidmore jumped out to a 5-2 lead through the first 11 minutes, but from that point on the two teams battled back and forth in the final 49 minutes as neither team would hold more than a two-goal lead. After Skidmore's Katie Weber tied the game for the ninth time with an unassisted goal with just 5:19 remaining, Clarkson's Brittnie Carroll was awarded a free-position shot after an infraction was called on the Throughbred goalkeeper Courtney DeStefano. Shooting at an unguarded net, Carroll put the Knights up, 15-14. After gaining control of the ball with less than a minute remaining, Clarkson's Alicia Chace (Cortland, NY) eluded the Skidmore defenders and settled behind the opponent's net, finally finding senior Lindsey Grigg (Watertown, NY) alone in front. Grigg scored an insurance goal with 32 seconds remaining to conclude the scoring.

Grigg led the Knights with six goals and Alyssa Breed (Macedon, NY) added three goals. Carroll, Kim Loucks (Waterloo, NY) and Emily Bojarski (Syracuse, NY) each added two goals for Clarkson. Laura Flynn scored five goals to lead the Throughbreds. Katie Weber and Abbie Klaus each added three scores.

Erin Duffy (Liverpool, NY) made 18 saves for the Knights while DeStefano made 12 stops for Skidmore.
