Playing its sixth one-goal game of the season, the Clarkson University Hockey team came up short in Hamden, CT on Friday night, falling to Quinnipiac 3-2 before 3,444 at the TD Banknorth Sports Center. Tied 1-1 through 40 minutes of play, Quinnipiac out scored the Golden Knights 2-1 in the final period to pull out the victory.
Ranked 8th in the country entering the weekend, Clarkson, which stands at 6-3 overall and 3-1 in ECAC Hockey play, will faceoff at Princeton in New Jersey at 4:30 on Saturday afternoon.
In a rematch of last year’s league tournament championship game, Quinnipiac gained a measure of revenge by handing the Green and Gold their first conference loss of the season. The Bobcats (3-3-1, 1-1-1), who never trailed in the contest, scored late in the first with Jamie Bates’ goal at 18:24.
The Knights tied it up midway through the second when junior Chris D’Alvise (Mississauga, ONT) finished off a perfect feed in front from classmate Shea Guthrie (Carleton Place, ONT) for his third goal of the year at 11:15. Freshman Lauri Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland) also assisted.
At 6;26 of the final frame, Jean-Marc Beaudoin put Quinnipiac in the lead 2-1, but Clarkson came back with a goal by senior David Cayer (Longueuil, QUE) to even the score with under 10 minutes to play. Freshman Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) found Cayer all alone in the slot where the senior fired a quick turn-around shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the year. Senior captain Nick Dodge (Oakville, ONT) also assisted, freeing up the puck along the boards.
The Bobcats came through with the game-winner at 14:39 when Bryan Leitch connected on the power play.
Quinnipiac out shot the Knights 25-23. Senior David Leggio (Williamsville, NY) posted 22 saves. Clarkson was 0-5 on the power play while the Bobcats were 1-of-7 with the man advantage.
