Potsdam, NY - Despite trailing significantly in shots, Rensselaer took advantage of its opportunities against the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, scoring four times in a span of 10:08 between the second and third period, and held on for a 4-3 ECACHL victory in front of 232 fans Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights dropped to 14-10-2 overall and 6-7-1 in the ECACHL while the Engineers, who were receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com poll, improved to 11-13-1 and 7-6-1 in conference. Clarkson currently resides in eighth place in the conference standings while RPI is tied for sixth in the league slate.
Freshman Genevieve Lavoie (St. Laurent, QUE) opened the scoring with her 19th goal of the season, tallying a power-play marker at 13:34 of the first with assists going to classmate Carlee Eusepi (Oakville, ONT) and senior Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT). Clarkson appeared to be on its way to a second straight victory, outshooting RPI 13-3 in the frame.
The Knights scored again at 7:28 of the second period on Bailkowski's eight goal of the year with Eusepi and junior Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) receiving notice for the helpers. Unfortunately for the Knights, the momentum swung into the direction of the Engineers as RPI scored twice in the final four minutes of the second period to tie the score 2-2. Sarah Daniel scored an even-strength goal at 15:57 with Ellen McNamara assisting, and then Allysen Weidner picked up a power-play goal at 18:59 to tie the score. Whitney Naslund and Allison Wright each earned assists.
RPI continued to make the most of its chances when Emily Donowick scored at 2:31 to give the Engineers a 3-2 advantage. Naslund would score what would prove to be the game-winner at 6:05, giving Rensselaer a 4-3 advantage. Clarkson's Bailkowski scored a power-play goal with assists going to Eusepi and Beezer five minutes later to pull the Knights back to within a goal, but Clarkson was unable to come up with the equalizer.
Clarkson out shot RPI 33-14 in the game and wsa 3-for-7 on the power play while Rensselaer was just 1-for-6 with the man-advantage. Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) made 10 saves for Clarkson while Ashley Mayr recorded 30 stops for the Engineers.
