Potsdam, NY - Producing just six hits in 16 innings, the Clarkson University Baseball team dropped a pair of Liberty League conference games to St. Lawrence Sunday afternoon, 8-0 and 8-0, at Snell Field.
With the losses, the Golden Knights fell to 19-17 overall and 12-9 in the Liberty League, dropping Clarkson to the four seed in next weekend's Liberty League conference tournament. The Saints moved to 21-12 and 14-7 and jumped to the second seed in the tournament. Clarkson finishes the regular season on Monday when the team faces Ithaca at the Syracuse Sky Chiefs' Alliance Bank Stadium.
In the opener, Josh White allowed just one hit and struck out seven as he threw a seven-inning shutout for the Saints. Brian Theilemann (Troy, NY) picked up the Knights' only hit while St. Lawrence earned 11. St. Lawrence scored one in the third and broke the game open in the fourth with four runs. Saints' first baseman Jeff DiGeronimo went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and Matt Carrigg was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.
In the second game, the Knights failed to play defense behind starter Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY), making four errors, as he allowed seven runs in just over six innings, but only three of the runs were earned. Carey, who came into the game with an unblemished 9-0 record, struck out seven despite not having his best stuff. He gave up eight hits and uncharacteristically walked four and also hit a batter.
St. Lawrence's Mike Gipson followed up White's performance with a near complete-game shutout of his own, going eight strong innings and allowing five hits while striking out seven. Chris Kerr came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to finish the game for the Saints. From the nine-hole, Andrew Ford went 3-for-5 to lead the Saints and Joe Regonlinski was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs. Carrigg went 2-for-3 with two more runs scored
