LATE HIT FROM STOTHERS LIFTS KNIGHTS TO WIN and SPLIT VERSUS VASSAR

April 9, 2006

Potsdam, NY - Junior Gerald Stothers (Malta, NY) broke open a tie game with a single in the top of the eighth inning to start a three-run rally, leading the Clarkson University Baseball team to a 5-2 win in game two of a Liberty League doubleheader split against Vassar Sunday afternoon at Snell Field.

The Golden Knights, who lost the first game 3-1 before claiming victory in game two, moved to 11-10 overall and 6-6 in the conference while Vassar improved to 4-15 and 3-5.

In the opening game, the Golden Knights got on the scoreboard first when Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) led off the third inning with a single to center. After advancing to second on a stolen base and then to third on a groundout, Cowin raced home to make the score 1-0 on another groundout by TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY). The lead was shortlived as Vassar tallied a run in the bottom of the inning when Matt Elias' sacrifice fly to center scored Jon Feingold, who led off the inning with a walk. The Brewers scored another run in the fourth on a double by Ivan Cedillo which again scored Feingold who began a two-out rally with a bunt single. In the fifth Mike Murn plated Paul Noonan with a single for Vassar's third run.

Quinn Robinson earned his first win of the season for Vassar, striking out five and allowing two hits over seven innings. Kevin Hickey (Clifton Park, NY) took the loss for Clarkson.

In game two, Vassar opened the scoring in the first inning when Ivan Cedillo was cut down on a pick off play, allowing John Mandel to score from third. The Brewers held a 1-0 lead until the fifth inning when Zach Richardson (Parishville, NY) grounded into a double play, scoring Matt Mellert (Penn Argyl, PA) from third base to make the score 1-1.

Neither team could push home a run until the eighth inning when Stothers stroked a hit between the shortstop and the third baseman to score Brian Theilemann (Troy, NY) from second. With runners on second and third just one batter late, Mike Bresett (Norwood, NY) came through with a two-run single to center to make the score 4-1. Clarkson added another run in the ninth and the Brewers battled back for a run in the bottom of the final inning, but a strikeout and a double play ended the Vassar threat.

Rick Bittner (Lancaster, NY) picked up his second win of the season with seven strong innings, allowing four hits and striking out five. Greg Chojecki (West Seneca, NY) came on in the eight inning to earn the save. Bresett went 3-for-4 for the Golden Knights and Mandell was 3-for-4 to lead Vassar in game two.
