POTTER AND CAREY DELIVER GEMS FOR KNIGHTS SWEEP OF VASSAR

April 8, 2006

Potsdam, NY - In one game, the Clarkson University Baseball team need to scratch and claw. In the other it was a rout. Both ended with the Golden Knights winning, earning a 2-1 come-from-behind victory in the opener and a 17-1 pasting in the second game of a Liberty League doubleheader sweep of Vassar Saturday afternoon at Snell Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 10-9 on the season and evened their conference mark at 5-5 while Vassar dropped to 3-14 overall and fell to 2-4 in the league. The two teams will finish up the weekend with another doubleheader on Sunday.

Clarkson junior David Potter (Crown Point, NY) and Adam Gallari of Vassar locked up in the first game and threw up zeros on the scoreboard for the first four innings before the Brewers jumped ahead in the fifth inning. Using a groundball up the middle and a timely flare to right field, Vassar went up 1-0 on an RBI single by John Mandel. However, the Golden Knights responded in the bottom of the inning with two runs, coming on run-scoring doubles from both Brian Theilemann (Troy, NY) and TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY). Potter cruised through the final two innings to earn his first win of the season, striking out eight over seven innings while allowing only two hits.

In the second game, Clarkson was held scoreless through the first two frames, but then posted at least one run in the final six innings to go on to an easy win. Zach Richardson (Parishville, NY) went 4-for-5 with three runs scored while Rob Cowin (Albany, NY), Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT) and Theilemann all drove in at least two runs for the Knights. Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) followed up Potter's performance with seven strong innings of his own, striking out six and allowing just five hits while walking none. Jaime Tunison (Ithaca, NY) and Mike Passinella (Troy, NY) each delivered a hitless inning to finish off the victory for Clarkson.
