Potsdam, NY - Three runs in the top of the tenth inning, including a long two-run home run from senior Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT), led the Clarkson University Baseball team to a sweep of Rochester Sunday afternoon, with the Golden Knights taking the first game 7-0 and the second contest 15-12 at Snell Field.

The Golden Knights sweep gave the team its fourth straight Liberty League playoff berth with a record of 19-15 overall and 12-7 in the conference. Rochester also claimed a spot in the post-season tournament while falling to 14-20 and 13-9.

In the opener, junior Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) threw his second consecutive two-hit shutout, striking out three and walking one. It was his ninth win of the season, making Carey the first pitcher in Clarkson history to start a season 9-0. Carey has allowed only one run in his last five appearances (29 innings) and that run was unearned.

The Golden Knights jumped on top of the Yellowjackets in the opener with a run in the first and then four more in the third before coming up with insurance runs in the fifth and sixth. Junior TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY) was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Mike Bresett (Norwood, NY) went 1-for-3 with a two-run double.

Game two was a wild affair with 11 combined errors and 11 combined hit batsmen, though none were malicious. The teams went back and forth in each inning as at least one run came across in every inning but the fifth. Late in the game, Clarkson scored four in the sixth to take the lead only to see Rochester re-claim the advantage with two three in the bottom of the inning. Three runs were scored by Clarkson in the seventh, but the Yellowjackets tallied twice in the bottom of the eighth. An unearned run in the ninth tied the score 12-12, but Casey's two-run home run capped a three-run inning for Clarkson to give the Knights a 15-12 lead. Darrell Carey came back in to shut the door with a one-inning hitless inning to earn the save.

For Clarkson Brian Theilemann and Casey each went 4-for-7 with three runs scored, combining for nine RBIs. Freshman Sal DiSanza (Elbridge, NY) went 4-for-4 with three runs scored after coming in midway through the contest and senior Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) was 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two driven in. The Yellowjackets enjoyed standout games from Dan Brien, who went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and Dave Kloc, was who was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two driven in. Dan Pfohl, Frank Infurna and Kurt Bednarcyk also contributed two hits each.
