CAREY EARNS WIN TO SALVAGE SPLIT AT UNION

April 2, 2006

Schenectady, NY - Although both pitchers threw well enough to pick up a victory, only Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) left with a win as the Clarkson University Baseball team split a doubleheader against Union, losing the opener 2-0 in seven innings but salvaging the series with a 5-2 win in the 9-inning nightcap Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 8-9 overall and 3-5 in the Liberty League while Union's three wins in four games pushed the Dutchmen to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Clarkson plays its first home games of the season this weekend when the Knights host Vassar.

David Potter (Crown Point, NY) turned in his best outing of the season in the opener on Sunday, allowing only four hits over a seven-inning complete game in which he struck out five. Unfortunately, Union's Eric Giovannone came through with a seven-inning complete game shutout, giving up just two hits and no walks while whiffing four. Union came through with a run in the sixth and the seventh innings, both coming on wild pitches. The first Union runner scored after reaching on a wild pitch following a strikeout and came around on a ground out, while the second Union runner scored on an errant toss to the plate after reaching on a single.

Carey made sure the Knights ended the weekend on a positive note, but he got off to a shaky start, allowing two runs on four hits through the first two innings. Over the final seven frames, however, Carey buckled down and allowed only three more hits. He finished with six strikeouts and walked five in earning his fourth win of the season.

Clarkson's offense emerged in the second game with three runs in the second inning, two coming on a single by Zach Richardson (Parishville, NY). Matt Giordano (Liverpool, NY) scored the Knights' third run on a double play. The Golden Knights added single runs in the sixth inning and seventh innings with Gerald Stothers (Malta, NY) and Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) providing run-scoring hits.
