KNIGHTS COME UP SHORT IN SLUGFEST VS OSWEGO

April 19, 2006

Watertown, NY – Despite a 16-hit attack that broke the Clarkson University Baseball team out of a tough hitting slump, the Golden Knights were out performed at the plate by Oswego State as the Lakers wound up with a 13-8 victory on Wednesday at Duffy Fairgrounds.

The Golden Knights dropped to 13-14 overall with the loss while Oswego State improved to 11-14. Clarkson returns to Liberty League action this weekend when it visits Skidmore College.

Oswego quickly jumped out to a five-run lead through the first two innings as the SUNYAC’s top-hitting club proved its prowess at the plate with six hits, including three for extra bases. The Lakers scored three times in the first and twice in the second inning. Clarkson tallied a score in the top of the third inning on a wild pitch and then scored again in the fourth when Zach Richardson (Parishville, NY) plated Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT), who had opened the inning with a double to the wall. Unfortunately, the Lakers continued to hit, scoring three more times in the fifth inning to make the score 8-2.

Clarkson strung together five consecutive hits with two outs in the fifth inning to get right back into the game, scoring four times in middle frame. TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY) started the scoring with a run-scoring triple, followed by RBI hits from Casey, Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) and Richardson, cutting the lead to 8-6. Oswego responded with four more in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Knights pushed across two more runs in the sixth for a 12-8 score, but that was as close as Clarkson would come.

Stefan Casey finished the game 4-for-6 for Clarkson with a RBI while Mickey Booth (Minisink, NY) was 3-for-5 and two runs scored. Brian Theilemann (Troy, NY) and Zach Richardson each went 2-for-5.

For Oswego State, Nick Perioli went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI and Jake Alsheimer was 4-for-5. Three other Lakers also enjoyed multiple hit games.
