Sophomore Greg Lamb (Baldwinsville, NY) posted a career-high 20 saves, but another late-game rally came up short for the Clarkson University Lacrosse team as it lost 9-7 at St. Lawrence in Liberty League action played in Canton on Wednesday afternoon.
The Golden Knights battled St. Lawrence (8-3, 4-0) in a tight game throughout the entire 60 minutes and made it a one-goal contest with back-to-back goals less than a minute apart late in the fourth quarter. Freshmen Erik Hilfinger (Ann Arbor, MI) and Brian Hoey (Auburn, NY), scored at 7:41 and 8:23, respectively to pull the Green and Gold to within one at 8-7. With just 37 seconds left, however, the Saints ended Clarkson’s comeback bid with a goal by Nick Mastine that sealed the SLU victory.
The Saints held a 3-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes and outscored Clarkson 3-1 in the second quarter to hold a 6-3 advantage at the half, their largest lead of the game. The Knights made it 6-4 through 45 minutes of play and than traded three goals apiece with St. Lawrence in the final stanza.
Freshman Greg Gibbons (Baldwinsville, NY) paced the Clarkson attack with three goals. Hoey chipped in a goal and two assists. Seniors Brian Hanlon (Marcellus, NY) and Bryan Johnson (Newark, NY) added one goal each.
St. Lawrence out shot the Knights 46-34 and held a slight edge in groundballs, 31-26. Clarkson’s comeback bid was hurt by the lack of success on faceoffs, where the Green and Gold won only four of 18 draws. Freshman Cory Schneider (Yorktown, NY) recorded a team-high four groundballs for the Knights.
At 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League, Clarkson will look to snap a three-game losing streak when it plays at conference foe Union College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
