KNIGHTS EARN ROAD SPLIT IN LEAGUE OPENER VS RPI

March 24, 2006

Troy, NY - Junior Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) earned his third win in as many starts as the Clarkson University Baseball team split its opening conference doubleheader against rival Rensselaer, winning the first 7-5 before dropping the second game 3-2 Friday afternoon at Robision Field.

The Golden Knights moved to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League and face the Red Hawks again on Saturday in another doubleheader.

The Knights picked up the win in the first game thanks to Carey's impressive performance. The junior righthander allowed just four hits and struck out four over five innings for the victory. Clarkson scored four times in the fifth inning and held off a three-run seventh inning by the Red Hawks to win the game. Freshman Greg Chojecki (West Seneca, NY) went two innings to pick up his third save of the season. Zach Richardson (Parishville, NY) went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs. Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT) hit his first home run of the season for the Knights.

In the second game, sophomore Joe Zongol pitched a complete nine innings for the Red Hawks, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out nine to lead Rensselaer to a split. Freshman Rick Bittner (Lancaster, NY) allowed just eight hits over six innings to be the tough-luck loser for the Knights.
