A bid by the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team for a weekend sweep in New England was denied in Providence, RI on Saturday afternoon as Brown University handed the Golden Knights a 3-1 loss at Meehan Auditorium.
Clarkson, which is still in position for a home-ice berth in the upcoming ECAC Hockey League, owns a 21-10-1 overall record and a 12-6 conference mark. The Knights close out the regular season next weekend hosting Dartmouth and Harvard at Cheel Arena.
Brown built a 3-0 lead early into the second period before freshman Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) scored for the Knights at 14:53 of the middle frame. Gaudet finished off assists from juniors Melissa Marshall (Oak Lawn, IL) and Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT) for her eighth goal of the season.
Both teams had 20 shots on goal, with Clarkson forcing Bear goaltender O’Hara Shipe to make 11 saves in the opening 20 minutes. Junior Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) made three saves on six shots through the first 21:55 of play to take the loss. Junior Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) held Brown scoreless over the final 38:05 of play with 14 stops.
Clarkson was 0-of-6 on the power play and shut down Brown on both its man-advantage opportunities.
