Third-Ranked SLU Drops Golden Knights, 3-1

October 20, 2006

Canton, NY - In the first game of a home-and-home series, St. Lawrence University jumped out to a quick lead with a goal just 11 seconds into the game and then held off the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team 3-1 in the ECACHL opener Friday night at Appleton Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked 11th and 10th in a pair of national polls, respectively, fell to 2-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in the ECACHL while 3rd-ranked St. Lawrence maintained its unblemished mark at 5-0-0. The two teams will face off again at 3:00 pm on Saturday at Clarkson's Cheel Arena.

Just 11 seconds into the first frame, Sabrina Harbec put St. Lawrence up 1-0 with assists going to Chelsea Grills and Annie Guay, but the quick-scoring Saints did not light the lamp again for the remainder of the period as the Golden Knights hung around, trailing just 1-0 through 20 minutes.

St. Lawrence added to its lead in the second period with a goal by Marianna Locke at 7:57, and held a 2-0 advantage until junior Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) scored her fourth goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity at 15:17 with classmate Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) and freshman Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) assisting. It was the third straight game that Morrison has scored a goal for the Knights.

The one-goal advantage for the Saints would return to two as Locke put St. Lawrence up 3-1 at 18:06 in the second period with an assist going to Crystal Connors, who also assisted on Locke's first goal along with Alison Domenico.

St. Lawrence steadily held control of the game with a 36-15 advantage in shots, with healthy edges in all three periods, and a 46-19 advantage in faceoffs. Clarkson went 1-for-10 on the power play while the Saints were scoreless in four chances.

Senior Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) stopped 33 shots for the Knights and Meghan Guckian made 14 saves for the Saints.
