Potsdam, NY – A trio of players each tallied two goals as the ninth-ranked Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team cruised to a 7-1 non-league win over Rensselaer in front of 401 fans Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights earned their fourth consecutive win and moved to 18-7-1 in 2005-06. Clarkson will complete its eight-game home stand next weekend when the Knights host ECACHL foes Quinnipiac and Princeton. The Engineers, who dropped their third straight decision and fell to 13-4-2 on the season, suffered their worst loss of the season. RPI had only one other loss all season by more than two goals (4-1 versus Maine on November 19, 2005). Clarkson’s six-goal margin marked the fourth time this year that the Knights have won by six goals or more.

Though the Golden Knights were dominating play in the first period, it was Rensselaer that got on the scoreboard first with its first shot. Julie Welte scored her sixth goal of the season on a wrap around shot which snuck through the legs of Clarkson goaltender Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) at 11:02. Jaime Jacquard-Sowa and Sarah Daniel each earned assists on the RPI goal.

The Engineers advantage would be short-lived as Clarkson tied the score 1-1 in the final minutes of the period. Sophomore Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) out skated two RPI players to the puck at the blue line and sent a pass over to Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE). Gaudet’s shot from point blank range was stopped on a split by RPI goaltender Rosina Schiff, but the rebound came out in front to Beazer who pushed the puck past the goal line at 18:13.

The second period was owned by Clarkson as the Golden Knights scored four times, including twice on the power play. Immediately following a man-advantage opportunity for Rensselaer, junior captain Lindsay Williams (Mississauga, ONT) took the puck near the red line and skated all the way down the left side and shot the puck into the top corner from a difficult angle to put the Knights up 2-1 at 18:13.

Three and a half minutes later, Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) scored her team-leading 13th goal of the season as she picked up a rebound in front and floated the puck over Schiff’s glove after an attempted wrap around by Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO). Beazer scored on the power play 10 minutes later at 16:27 to give the Knights a 4-1 lead and then Shaidle scored another power-play goal with less than two minutes remaining to give Clarkson a healthy 5-1 advantage.

Nine seconds into a power play, the Golden Knights produced their sixth goal of the game Meghan Park (Petrolia, ONT) scored her first goal of the season. Sophie Doyon (Victoriaville, QUE) and Cloutier each assisted on the goal at the 9:37 mark. Park came back with another goal at 10:52, assisted by Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT).

Shaidle, Beazer and Park each scored two goals for the Knights while Cloutier and Gaudet each assisted twice. Beazer also added an assist for a three-point game.

Kira Hurley earned the win for Clarkson, making three stops in 36:27 before being replaced by Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB), who stopped six shots in the final 23 minutes. Schiff made 18 saves in just under 50 minutes of action for RPI and Emily Ford came on to make two saves in the final 10 minutes.

Clarkson was a perfect 3-for-3 on the power play. The Engineers were held without a goal in their two-man advantage chances.
