Canton, NY - Seniors JJ Lorence (Liverpool, NY) and Nick Huffman (Fulton, NY) each picked up victories as the Clarkson University Baseball team swept a doubleheader against St. Lawrence 4-1 and 9-3 in Liberty League action Friday afternoon at Tom Fay Field.
The Golden Knights improved to 11-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference while St. Lawrence saw its record even at 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League.
In the first game, the Golden Knights struggled offensively for the first four innings and fell behind 1-0 on an unearned run, but junior Stefan Casey (Waterbury, VT) came through with a two-out, two-run double to give Clarkson a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Freshman Jay Josef (Liverpool, NY) then followed up Casey's hit with a run-scoring single. Brandon Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) added another run-scoring hit in the sixth for a 4-1 lead. Barcomb was 2-for-2 and Rob Cowin (Albany, NY) went 2-for-3 in the game.
JJ Lorence (Liverpool, NY) improved to 3-0 on the season for Clarkson by pitching a seven-inning complete game. Lorence struck out eight and allowed no walks while scattering seven hits. His team-leading ERA dropped to 0.43 for the season.
The second game saw Nick Huffman (Fulton, NY) earn his 20th career victory and third of the season as the Knights offense continued where it left off from the first game. Barcomb drove in the Knights' first three runs, one on a first-inning single and two more on a triple in the third. TJ Brinkman (Troy, NY) then added a three-run double in the fifth inning and another run-scoring hit in the seventh. John Smith (Hermon, NY) contributed a two-run double in the ninth inning to account for the rest of Clarkson's scoring. Barcomb and Brinkman each went 2-for-4 and Giovan Scialdone (Colonie, NY) was 2-for-3 as the designated hitter. Lorence struck out for the first time in 46 at bats this year and 50 total dating back to last season.
Huffman became the Golden Knights' first-ever 20-game winner, striking out four and walking none over eight innings.
