CAREY K's SIXTEEN BUT KNIGHTS DROP DOULBEHEADER TO BROCKPORT

April 13, 2005

Watertown, NY – In spite of two solid pitching performances, the Clarkson University Baseball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end in a doubleheader against Brockport State as the Golden Knights dropped a twinbill to the Golden Eagles 5-1 and 9-6, in 13 innings, at Duffy Fairgrounds.

The Golden Knights dropped to 9-6 overall while Brockport State moved to 13-9 with the sweep.

The second game was the more remarkable of the two as Brockport jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first three innings. Sophomore Darrell Carey (Bohemia, NY) came on in relief in the bottom of the third for starter David Potter (Crown Point, NY) and nearly finished the contest, pitching 10 1/3 innings and striking out 16 batters before becoming the hard-luck loser as a pair of errors cost Carey in the bottom of the 13th.

The Golden Eagles scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and scored four more in the third inning thanks to a two-run doubles from Andy Petersen and Jeff Schwegler. Brockport added another run in the fourth inning before the Knights finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brandon Barcomb (Cadyville, NY) delivered a two-out, two-run triple to put Clarkson down just 6-2. After another two-run double from Mike Onisk (Baldwinsville, NY) in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Golden Knights trailed by just two runs. Clarkson led off the bottom of the seventh inning with two opposite field singles and JJ Lorence (Liverpool, NY) delivered a two-run double to tie the game up with two outs. Both teams enjoyed solid scoring chances over the next five innings, but neither team converted until the Golden Eagles tallied three runs in the top of the 13th inning as a two-out single combined with an error brought home two runs to break the tie.

In addition to the two-run hits from Lorence, Onisk and Barcomb, freshman Jay Josef (Liverpool, NY) came through with a 3-for-6 performance for Clarkson.

In the first game, Brockport led off the first inning with two runs on a one-out double Joe Lux and then followed up with a bases loaded situation in the second that Clarkson hurler John Smith (Hermon, NY) was able to escape from unscathed as he struck out the last two hitters in the inning.

After a few more scoreless frames, the Golden Knights finally broke the no-hit bid by the Golden Eagles as Onisk singled home Lorence to cut the Brockport lead in half, 2-1. However, the Golden Eagles added three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead which they would never relinquish.

Smith was saddled with the loss in the first game as he went six innings and struck out seven. Kyle Seymour (Tupper Lake, NY) came in and pitched a scoreless seventh for the Knights. Only Onisk and Josef earned hits for Clarkson in the opener.
