Princeton, NJ - A huge Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey League (ECACHL) point on the road was just seconds away for the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team on Friday night, but the Golden Knights came up just short of an upset as nationally-ranked Princeton University pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory at Hobey Baker Rink in New Jersey.
The Tigers, ranked ninth in the country and one of the hottest teams in the nation, rallied for the victory by getting the winning goal with just 17 seconds remaining in the extra session. Clarkson (9-11-6, 4-8-1 ECACHL) took a 1-0 lead in the second period on sophomore Jill Nolan’s (Labrador, NF) team-high 10th goal of the year at 6:57 with freshman Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) assisting.
Princeton (12-5-4, 6-4-2 ECACHL) came back to tie with Liz Keady’s goal at 7:41 of the third. Kim Pearce spoiled an outstanding effort in goal by Clarkson sophomore Kira McDonald (Pickering, ONT) with the deciding goal at 4:43 of overtime.
The Tigers out shot the Knights 48-13, but McDonald responded with a season-high 46 saves to keep Clarkson in the contest. Clarkson was 0-of-3 on the power play, while Princeton was 0-of-4 with the man advantage.
Clarkson plays Yale at Ingalls Rink in New Haven, CT on Saturday afternoon beginning at 4:00 p.m.
