Potsdam, NY – Junior point guard Vanessa Westcott (Parish, NY) scored a team-high 13 points and contributed 6 rebounds and 6 assists as the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team earned its second win of the season with a 51-42 non-league victory over RIT Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-2 on the season while the Tigers dropped to 1-1. Clarkson closes out the 2005 home portion of the schedule on Wednesday when they host Plattsburgh State.

The first half saw both teams enjoy modest leads that amounted to only three points through the first 13 minutes. A four-minute scoring drought by both squads finally ended with a small run by RIT that extended their lead to five points in the final minutes. A lay up by Alicia Chace (Cortland, NY) as the clock expired in the half brought the Knights back to within three at the break, 28-25.

Junior forward Sarah Wesner (Sidney, NY) shot 3-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the free throw line to lead all scorers with eight points and five rebounds in the first half. Ramata Diallo had seven points and four rebounds to lead the Tigers.

A pair of 3-point field goals in the opening minutes of the second half, one by Westcott and another by Erika Fritjofson (East Barre, VT), gave the Golden Knights a lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. The score was tied at 36-36 with 11:01, but Clarkson went on an 11-2 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Monica Thomas (Sandwich, MA) with 5:20 remaining, to give Clarkson a 47-38 advantage. Neither team would score again until the Knights’ Sarah Wesner made a pair of free throws with 1:50 remaining. From there, Clarkson was able to hold a sizeable lead that the Tigers were unable to overcome.

Westcott struggled from the floor, but made up for it with a 6-for-7 performance from the free throw line. Wesner finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, Thomas closed with nine points, Mickala Henson (Waverly, NY) contributed four blocks.

Diallo scored 10 points and added 11 rebounds for the Tigers. RIT couldn’t solve Clarkson’s defense in the second half, shooting just 5-for-26 from the floor (19.2 percent) in the second half. The Golden Knights were just a bit better at 26.7 percent (8-for-30), but scored on three 3-point field goal attempts, while the Tigers shot 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.
