KNIGHTS START WOMEN'S HOCKEY SEASON OFF WITH 3-1 VICTORY OVER VERMONT

October 7, 2005

Burlington, VT - Sophomore left wing Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO) scored twice in the season-debut of the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as the Golden Knights beat former ECACHL foe Vermont 3-1 in a non-league contest Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights have started their second straight season with a victory to move to 1-0. Vermont dropped to 0-1-1 and the two teams will face off again at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

The Catamounts enjoyed a 1-0 lead for the first time in the past four meetings against the Knights when Frankie Williams scored a goal at the 14:44 mark of the opening period with assists coming from Gabrielle Worzella and Kate Hudspeth. The advantage was shortlived, however, as Cloutier scored her first goal of the season and fifth of her career with an unassisted marker at 16:23 in the first period. Vermont enjoyed better chances in the first 20 minutes, out shooting Clarkson 9-5.

Clarkson began to take control in the second period with a 12-9 advantage in shots, leading to what would prove to be the game-winning goal from junior Melissa Marshall (Oak Lawn, IL) at 12:30 of the period. Sophomore Meghan Park (Petrolia, Ontario) assisted on the game-winning goal. The Knights added a third goal in the final period with Cloutier scoring her second goal at 13:42, a power-play marker, with the assist going to classmate Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT).

Junior Kira Hurley (Pickering, Ontario) made 25 saves, with eight coming in the first, nine in the second and eight more in the third period. Shivaun Siegl stopped 26 shots for the Catamounts. Clarkson finished 1-for-5 on the power play and the Knights held Vermont scorless in their three man-advantage chances.
