January 8, 2005

Potsdam, NY – Roxanne Gaudiel recorded 19 saves for her fifth shutout of the season as 10th-ranked Princeton University defeated the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team 3-0 in ECACHL action Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights fell to 6-8-5 with their second straight loss to an ECACHL opponent, and fell to 2-5-1 in conference play. Princeton improved to 10-5-3 overall and 4-4-1 in ECACHL play. Clarkson travels to ECACHL foes Dartmouth and Vermont next weekend.

Though the Golden Knights allowed only one shot through the first 11 minutes, Princeton dominated play in the first period, out shooting the Knights 14-0. Their third shot of the period made it past Clarkson goaltender Kira McDonald (Pickering, ONT) at the 11:47 mark when Sarah Butsch scored her third of the season. April Brown and Laura Watt each picked up assists on the tally, their second and 14th assists, respectively, this year.

The Knights produced more shots early in the second period (7-4 through the first 10 minutes), but Princeton put forth a barrage of shots late thanks to two late penalties by Clarkson. The Tigers picked up a goal on the power play at 15:06 when Tarah Clark scored her second goal of the season. Marykate Oakley and Katharine Maglione each assisted on the goal as Princeton enjoyed a 13-8 shot advantage over the second 20 minutes.

The Tigers quickly put up another score in the third period when Laura Watt’s shot rattled around the top of the goal at the 0:42 mark after her first shot was deflected by McDonald. Kim Pearce and Heather Jackson each picked up assists on the goal. Clarkson had an opportunity to cut into the Tigers’ lead late in the third period when they went on a 5-on-3 power play, but Princeton killed the two penalties and went on for a 3-0 shutout.

McDonald made 31 saves for the Golden Knights. The Tigers went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Knights were shut down on three opportunities. Clarkson finished trailing in shots by a margin of 34-19.
