Canton, NY - Despite being out shot 45-18, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team put a severe scare into the St. Lawrence Saints in their first ever meeting, falling in the ECACHL league match up 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
The Golden Knights dropped to 4-5-3 overall with their third straight loss, all to ranked opponents, while St. Lawrence improved to 9-2-2. Clarkson will look to even the season series Sunday afternoon when they face the Saints at 2:00 pm in Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights were the first to get on the scoreboard as Emma Madigan (Mississauga, ONT) scored her first goal of the season at the 5:35 mark in the first period. Madigan one-timed a pass from freshman Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period. Clarkson was out shot 21-4 in the first frame, but played at a more even pace through the final two periods.
In the second period, the Saints wasted little time in tying the game and then taking the lead. Rebecca Russell scored her 10th goal of the season at the 2:23 mark and then assisted on another goal, a shorthanded marker at 6:44, by Annie Guay. The lead was short-lived for the Saints as Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) tallied her fifth goal of the season, a power-play goal, with an assist coming from captain Lindsay Williams (Mississauga, ONT). Williams took a hard shot on goal that St. Lawrence goaltender Meaghan Guckian handled, but Shaidle was there to put in the rebound.
The Saints scored the game-winning goal in the third period with just over 10 minutes remaining. Kate Michael passed the puck from the point to Russell in the near corner. Russell skated in and passed the puck to freshman Sabrina Harbec on the far post, who wristed it past Clarkson goaltender Kira McDonald (Pickering, ONT) for a power-play goal.
The Golden Knights went 1-for-7 on the power play while St. Lawrence scored once on their 11 opportunities. McDonald finished the game with 42 saves for Clarkson while Guckian stopped 16 shots for the Saints.
