Knights Bounce Back With 2-0 Win Over St. Cloud State

Arlington, VA – Spending more than six minutes skating down a player in the third period proved to be only an obstacle for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to overcome, as the Golden Knights rode a 29-save effort from Arianne Leblanc to pick up a 2-0 victory over St. Cloud State on day two of the D1 at DC Tournament, held at the MedStar Capitals Iceplex.

The Golden Knights, ranked 10th in the country, improved to 10-6-1 on the season while 14th-rated St. Cloud State fell to 6-11-1 on the year. Clarkson returns to action with a non-conference contest on Thursday at St. Lawrence University.

Leblanc posted her second shutout in four starts this season with her 29 saves, being bolstered by a Clarkson defense that killed off two near-consecutive penalties and 2:30 worth of 6-on-5 empty net attack in the final nine minutes of the third period.

Clarkson surpassed its shot total from Friday's game solely from its output in the first period against St. Cloud State on Saturday, tossing 14 shots on goal despite being down a player for four minutes off two minor penalties. The Knights' defense stood tall on the first penalty, allowing only a single shot that was wide of the cage. At the other end, Clarkson was busy on its power play opportunity, putting five on the St. Cloud goal but nevertheless coming up empty.

The Knights broke their scoreless streak in the DC area with a goal in the second period. The puck leaked into the Clarkson defensive third from the neutral zone and the Knights began a rush going the other way. Despite numbers being against her, Jenna Smellie went in on a 2-on-3 and tried a backhand from the right wing side, the puck snuck through the crease to find Bridget Stevenson for a tip in at 8:21 in the second, Stevenson's first goal and point of the season.

St. Cloud State responded with some renewed offense at the other end, but the Huskies continued to shoot from a little too far out to truly challenge Clarkson goaltender Arianne Leblanc.

Clarkson opened the third period on the power play and quickly capitalized on the opportunity. Sena Catterall won the puck out of a scrum along the right side boards and skated down towards the goal line, scooping a backhanded pass to Sara Manness at the left side of the right circle, flipping the puck high on the near side post at 0:44.

It appeared as if St. Cloud State would get a chance to even the contest when Clarkson was whistled for a penalty shortly after the goal, but only six seconds later the Huskies were called for a penalty of their own putting the skaters at 4-on-4, though both teams would go without any scoring chances.

Midway through the third period, the Huskies began to assert themselves offensively, but Leblanc continued her strong effort for the Knights, making numerous saves against the St. Cloud State rushes. Clarkson dialed up the difficulty for Leblanc and the rest of its defense, receiving penalties for slashing for nearly four consecutive minutes. However, it took nearly the entirety of that four minutes before St. Cloud would put a shot on net, as its other attempts were blocked or broken up.

Clarkson ended the game with a 30-29 lead in shots on goal and also held the Huskies scoreless on six power-play opportunities. Leblanc posted 29 saves, while Emilia Kyrkko, her counterpart at the other end of the ice, had 30 saves for the Huskies.
